A fibre is called microfibre if its fibres have a linear density of less than 1 denier. It is a synthetic fibre and is three times finer than cotton, twice as fine as silk and finer than wool. The fibres in your microfibre fabric may be acrylic, rayon, nylon or more commonly polyester.
