When I speak to students and recent graduates, one thing is clear — university teaches you the theory, but not always how the real world works. That’s where internships come in. They bridge the gap between what you learn in the classroom and what’s expected in the workplace.

I’ve worked with dozens of students through the Numensa Internship Program, and a pattern often emerges. Many of them are bright, motivated and have done well in their courses — but they still don’t quite know how to “turn up” to work. And by that, I mean how to navigate a team environment, how to manage themselves, how to handle feedback, and how to contribute in a meaningful way from day one.

There’s often a level of naivety — not because they’re not smart, but because they’ve never been shown how the corporate world operates. They need a little spoon-feeding to start with, and that’s okay. That’s why we built our program the way we did.
