What does the fashion design & product development internship program involve?

Learning and development objectives:

During the internship, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop essential skills in design & product development and understand how the design department relates to buying and production. The key learning and development areas include:

Fashion design:

  • Learn fashion sketching, garment construction, and pattern-making techniques.
  • Develop an understanding of colour palettes, fabric and trim selection appropriate for the market.

Product development:

  • Gain insight into the product development lifecycle, from concept ideation to production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including buying, sourcing, and suppliers, to bring designs to life.

Trend research and analysis:

  • Conduct market research to identify current fashion trends and consumer preferences.
  • Analyse fashion forecasts and translate trends into innovative design concepts.

Technical skills:

  • Practice using design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for creating digital fashion sketches and technical drawings.
  • Gain experience in using industry-standard tools for patternmaking and garment prototyping.

Sustainability in fashion:

  • Explore sustainable practices in fashion design, including eco-friendly materials and ethical production methods.
  • Learn about sustainable fashion trends and their impact on the industry.

Presentation and communication:

  • Develop effective presentation skills to showcase design concepts and ideas.
  • Enhance communication skills to collaborate with team members, suppliers, and manufacturers.

Tasks and responsibilities:

 

A design and product development intern will be involved in a variety of tasks designed to enhance their skills and contribute meaningfully to your creative projects.  Your tasks may include:

 

  • Researching current fashion trends and creating mood boards and design concepts.
  • Collaborating with the design team to develop prototypes and samples.
  • Communicating with suppliers and manufacturers to source fabrics and materials.
  • Participating in fittings and providing feedback on garment prototypes.
  • Creating technical drawings and specifications for production.
  • Assisting in organizing fashion shows, presentations, or product launches.
  • Contributing to the overall creative process and brainstorming sessions.

How do I enrol onto the program?

First you select whether you wish to do the standard or premium program and pay the appropriate preparation fee.  Whilst you are undertaking the preparation stage with our careers team, our placement team will be busy finding the 'best fit' internship for you.

Once you are interview ready, we will organise interviews with prospective intern partners.  When you have been offered and accepted an internship, you pay placement fee, and your 12-week internship will start.

Preparation:

We will enhance your skills and knowledge in retail buying including:

  • Foundations of Buying & Merchandise Planning online course
  • Tutorial to get you up to speed with key buying concepts
  • 15% of any of our online courses

 

Internship:

  • Company introductions
  • 12 week internship in a design department

Standard Internship Fees

The standard internship fee is $1,990 and is paid in two parts as indicated below:

Preparation:  $795 (including GST)

Internship Placement:  $1,195 (including GST)

Premium Internship Fees

The premium internship fee is $2,490 and is paid in two parts as indicated below:

Preparation:  $1,295 (including GST)
